Who pays for CPD — the employer or the employee?

Short answer

There is no universal rule. Many employers fund CPD directly or through an annual allowance, particularly where registration is a condition of the role. The regulatory obligation, however, almost always sits with the individual — so where an employer does not fund it, the responsibility to complete it remains.

Check your contract and any professional body guidance. Some sectors have collective agreements setting a minimum employer contribution; others leave it entirely to negotiation.

Where funding is limited, prioritise accredited activity that carries verifiable hours and covers a genuine gap in your practice, rather than spreading a small budget across several unverifiable webinars.
